Mi Portal Especial

Overview

Mi Portal Especial is the public-facing digital platform for Puerto Rico’s Special Education Program, serving one of the largest special education populations in the United States. Approximately 46% of Puerto Rico’s public school enrollment receives special education services, representing more than 100,000 students and their families.

The project was designed to centralize essential resources, improve access to services, and simplify the user experience for parents, guardians, educators, and service providers across the island.

Key contributions included:

• User interface and user experience design
• Appointment scheduling and participant registration module
• Demographic data visualization and reporting module
• Regional provider directory for special education services
• Accessibility and usability optimization

The Challenge

Families seeking special education services often had to navigate multiple platforms, fragmented resources, and complex administrative processes. The project required a solution that could consolidate information while remaining accessible to users with varying levels of digital literacy and internet connectivity.

The primary goals were:

• Centralize access to special education services and platforms
• Simplify registration and onboarding for new participants
• Present current demographic and program data in an understandable format
• Provide an organized, region-based directory of service providers
• Deliver an intuitive experience for users with limited technology skills and unreliable internet access
